Interlochen Center for the Arts: Messiah - Traverse Symphony Orchestra

Messiah - Kevin Rhodes, conductor. Performances are Saturday, March 15 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m. at the Corson Auditorium, on the campus of the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Maestro Rhodes will present Handel’s complete oratorio in a full concert performance – the first in many years in the area. Joining him will be a cast of four soloists, along with the Traverse Symphony Chorus and NMC Chorale, directed by Mark Puchala. Handel’s Messiah, completed in just 24 days in 1741, is regarded as the greatest oratorio ever written and one of the most beloved works of all time. The composer himself, according to his valet, wept often as the music flowed from his pen, overcome by its beauty. Although usually associated with the Advent season, Messiah was conceived and first performed during Easter. Among the most famous portions of the work are the soprano aria, “I Know that my Redeemer Liveth,” and the Hallelujah chorus, which concludes Part II. According to tradition, King George II was so moved by the chorus that he rose to his feet when he first heard it. When the king stood, all his subjects did likewise.
