Must be 21+ yrs. For details or tickets: TCBEERFEST.COM

Lovers of craft beer, world music and winter fun won’t want to miss the first annual Traverse City Winter Microbrew & Music Festival taking place under heated tents on the Clubhouse grounds at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa on Friday, February 12, 2010, from 5PM – 10PM. Tickets can be purchased at Oryana, Right Brain Brewery, Old Town Coffee, North Peak, Kilkenny’s and the Resort’s Concierge Desk beginning Monday, December 21.

The TC Winter Microbrew & Music Festival will kick off the Cherry Capital Winter WonderFest, a weekend-long festival scheduled for February 12-14 featuring three days of activities at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, downtown Traverse City and Mt. Holiday Ski & Recreation Area.

The TC Winter Microbrew & Music Festival will take place outdoors next to the Resort’s Clubhouse and on The Bear golf course. Guests will step out of the lodge into a winter wonderland featuring the main brew tent with live music from Euforquestra, an eight piece “Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk” dance band from Fort Collins, CO, the rockabilly honky-tonk of Delilah DeWylde and the Lost Boys, and the bagpipes and drum ensemble of GT Pipes and Drums. Bonfires and free sleigh rides will encircle a frozen winter pond surrounded by three tents showcasing dozens of craft breweries, local & national musicians and creative winter beer games.  Activities, special events and prizes will be featured throughout the night.

“After the success of the first-ever TC Microbrew & Music Festival this summer at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, we realized there was a great opportunity to bring the event back in the winter,” said Sam Porter of Porterhouse Productions, which produces the festival. “The Cherry Capital Winter WonderFest and Grand Traverse Resort are the perfect community partners for us to team up with to kick off Friday and support a weekend that draws thousands of visitors to our region.”

A $25 ticket to the festival includes live performances throughout the night from national and local artists, craft beer education, a custom 7 oz. mini-stein and five 7 oz. pours (with additional tokens available for purchase), free sleigh rides, free shuttle service from downtown Traverse City to the Resort and back, and more.

An after-party hosted by Short’s Brewery and the Michigan Brewers Guild will take place at Aerie Restaurant & Lounge, located on the 16th floor of the Resort’s Tower, from 10PM-2AM. Short’s will serve their popular local brews as guests enjoy live music and dancing. Local food, unique merchandise and beer gear will be showcased at this special event.

Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets to the festival in advance – entrance is an additional $5 at the door. Ticket buyers must be over 21.

Porterhouse Productions is now accepting applications and partner opportunities from breweries, artists, sponsors, shanty builders, snow fort builders, vendors and volunteers at info@porterhouseproductions.com.

The Traverse City Winter Microbrew & Music Festival is presented by Porterhouse Productions and Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, with special thanks to Traverse City volunteers, the Michigan Brewers Guild and Cherry Capital Winter WonderFest sponsors and partners.

Grand Traverse Commons

Thursday, February 04, 2010
1200 W. 11th Street
Traverse City,MI 49684

A trip to Traverse City would not be complete without a visit to one of our most exciting new developments.  This project is the country's largest historic preservation and adaptive reuse development.

Located just a few minutes west of Traverse City's downtown shopping area is the Village at Grand Traverse Commons.  A unique collection of dozens of historic buildings, on beautiful wooded grounds, that are being renovated into an exciting and fun area to explore.

In 1885, the State of Michigan chose Traverse City as the site for the Northern Michigan Asylum, a hospital dedicated to the idea that fresh air and beautiful surroundings could ease the suffering of the mentally ill. The hospital closed in 1989, but its extensive forested grounds and stately castle-like buildings have been preserved. The Commons (as it is now called) is a favorite place for walking, running, skiing and birdwatching.

Stroll these historic grounds and discover restaurants, retail shops, wineries, brick oven bakery and much more.  Learn more by clicking on to www.thevillagetc.com - and enjoy!

Blogger no longer supports FTP upload - Go Thingamablog!

Thursday, February 04, 2010

I know how it feels - years of posting to blogger via FTP only to have them decide to discontinue the service. I was stuck - logs of posts and all via FTP and sitting there on my website. What was I going to do now?

I first turned towards word press. If you are setup for Databases - nice option. You may find it too custom. If you are into designing a website with word press it may be worth the time invested but for a simple blog - too much intense.

I found Thingamablog.com on Wiki-pedia. Wow, now this is nice. It's like a stand along blogger but works even better! Nice and easy - simple blog posting. FTP right to my website makes my SEO thumb happy - including my clients & guests.

Your solution is Thingamablog - you will be up and posting in a flash. It really is easy and gives you a lot of control over your blog. And did I mention it's FREE! Yes - absolutely FREE... These gals and guys deserve donations!

Give it a try - you'll like it ALOT.

Traverse City Snowshoe Hikes

Thursday, February 04, 2010

Now Thru February 28, 2010

Family Event

(Sun. Sat. )
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Location: Sleeping Bear Dunes
Website: www.nps.gov/slbe

Each hike will start by meeting at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire at 1:00 p.m.  If you do not have your own snowshoes, you can reserve and borrow a pair from the park, free of charge.

At the Visitor Center, a Park Ranger will distribute snowshoes to those who need them and provide basic snowshoeing instructions. Then the Park Ranger will lead everyone in their own cars to the trailhead of the day.  On the trail, the Park Ranger will help participants identify flora and fauna, learn more about the National Lakeshore’s unique features, and witness the effects winter has on them all. Visitors should arrive prepared to be outside for about an hour and a half.  To be most comfortable and warm, wear waterproof boots and dress in layers so you can peel off clothes as you warm up.  The program will conclude by 3:00 p.m. back at the trailhead.  Note that the Visitor Center closes at 4:00 p.m., should you want to go back after the walk.

Snowshoeing is easy, fun, and good exercise!  If you can walk, then you can snowshoe, so it is also an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages.  The Park Ranger-led hikes are mildly strenuous, yet they proceed at a leisurely pace for only .5 to 1.5 miles.  This allows visitors an opportunity for discovery, adventure, and to look for signs of wildlife or evidence of ancient glaciers.  Some snowshoers simply want to experience and enjoy a winter wonderland, and that is what you will find at the National Lakeshore.  Park Rangers try to select a different location each week, so it is never the same hike twice!

The walk and snowshoe loan are free.  However, participants need to purchase a park entrance pass or display an annual pass in their vehicle to join in the fun.  Park passes cost $10 per vehicle and are good for seven days. The annual pass costs $20 and is valid for a year from the month of purchase.  Reservations are not required, but are strongly suggested, especially if you wish to borrow snowshoes or are with a group. Teachers and other group leaders may also schedule a Park Ranger to take their group snowshoeing this winter.  Please call 231-326-5134, extension 328, for details and to make reservations.  For more in-depth information about Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, go to www.nps.gov/slbe.

Renting from a Property Management Company

Thursday, February 04, 2010

When renting from a management company, guests enjoy additional benefits and services that are not typically offered by single homeowners, including a 24-hour customer service contact, concierge services, housekeeping, partnerships with local vendors, and sometimes the ability to search and reserve a home securely online. If a vacation home is not managed, the individual homeowner is responsible for the property’s maintenance, upkeep, and the customer service offered to renters, often as an absentee owner from other states or even countries abroad. Management companies handle all of this for individual homeowners, ensuring consistency and quality in both customer service and the level of accommodations.

Interlochen Center of the Arts

Thursday, February 04, 2010
4700 Highway 137
Interlochen, MI 49643
Phone: (231) 276-7200

One reason for the abundance of art offerings in the Traverse City area is the fine arts community at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. The center is located just 13 miles south of Traverse City. For over seven decades, Interlochen has been a resource for quality arts presentations (currently 750 concerts, visual art exhibits and theater and dance productions annually).

The Interlochen Arts Summer Camp and the Interlochen Arts Academy during the academic year are amongst the country's premier training centers for young musicians, dancers, actors, visual artists and writers. More than 2,000 campers age 8 to 18 come from 50 states and 38 foreign countries. The academy's 425 students in grade 9 through post-graduate studies come from 46 states and 17 countries. Their experience stays with them a lifetime, and includes not just the visual and performing arts, but new friends made in a breathtaking environment of pines and rustic cabins between two beautiful lakes.

Having access to both the campus and performances is a delight for both visitors and residents of the Traverse City area. Even without a concert ticket, it's worth the drive to the campus to take in the inspiring atmosphere and visit the historic sites. You can walk through the campus and catch the sights and sounds of the gifted young musicians playing their instruments in small practice huts and musical groups of all sizes in the classroom buildings or outside under the trees. Interlochen College of Creative Arts offers adult artists an opportunity to learn and express themselves creatively, through a variety of arts disciplines as well.

Except for the few weeks between camp and school terms, the place is busy day and night. Check the calendar of events to see what is going on during your visit.

When attending the big name summer concerts, you might want to take advantage of the local restaurateurs who offer picnic fare for concertgoers to enjoy among the pines. Annually, performers include students and faculty as well as guest artists, 500 performances of the summer concert series and 200 plus in the winter. Tickets for the various performances are available through the Interlochen Box Office as well as online at http://tickets.interlochen.org.

Inland Seas Education Association

Thursday, February 04, 2010
Since 1989, the Inland Seas Education Association has operated "floating classroom" programs where people of all ages can learn about the ecology of the Great Lakes by spending a half-day sailing and studying science on Grand Traverse Bay. The knowledge gained through these experiences will provide the leadership, understanding and commitment needed for the long-term stewardship of the Great Lakes. From June until August, the group offers Family Schoolship programs aboard the "Inland Seas," a 77-foot, two-masted schooner and the 31-foot Friendship sloop "Liberty," both based in Suttons Bay. Rates start at $30 per person, and groups of 25 to 28 can be accommodated.
